Advent & Christmas in Tyrol

Tyrolean tradition and modernity join hands in Innsbruck. A feeling that can truly be sensed at each of the six enchanting Christmas markets during the Advent season, all with their own very special character. The oldest and largest Christmas market in the city takes place beneath the mighty Christmas tree in front of the Golden Roof and has a truly nostalgic air. Handicrafts and Christmas ornaments can be found at more than 70 stalls, in Märchengasse and Riesengasse legendary figures transport visitors into a different world, and experience a sensation of floating up on the viewing platform far above over the Old Town and the huts.

Much higher up, on the Hungerburg, the Christmas market is the highest in Innsbruck. Small yet delightful, its stunning location gives a fantastic panoramic view over the city.The Christmas market at Marktplatz is of especial interest to families. It boasts a wide range of children’s activities, such as a puppet show, storytelling and even a petting zoo. A 14-metre-high Christmas tree made of Swarovski crystals – the only one of its kind – stands in the square.

With its trendy lighting design, the market in Maria-Theresien-Strasse is a very modern affair and features an exciting range of Christmas products from all over the world. Those seeking a more peaceful, atmospheric market, will appreciate the small, lovingly decorated stalls of the markets at Wiltener Platzl and in St. Nikolaus.
